Welcome to KuryoNews. We take the privacy of children and families seriously. This Privacy Policy explains what information we collect, how we use it, and the rights you have as a parent or guardian. Please read it carefully before allowing your child to use the app.

1. Who We Are

KuryoNews is a children's news application designed for children aged 7 to 12. The app is operated by KuryoNews Limited, registered at 43 Empire Square, London, SE1 4NB, United Kingdom ("we", "our", or "us").

KuryoNews Limited is registered with the Information Commissioner's Office (ICO) as a data controller, registration number ZC181650.

2. Two Ways to Use KuryoNews

KuryoNews can be used in two ways, and the data we collect depends on which one applies to you:

• Free access, no account: anyone can read a limited number of articles per day without creating an account or providing any personal information.
• Account holders: a parent or guardian ("Account Holder") creates an account, which allows their child ("Child User") to access additional features and, if subscribed, unlimited articles.

We do not allow children to create their own accounts. Account creation requires a parent or guardian who takes responsibility for their child's use of the app.

3. Information We Collect

3.1 Free Access (No Account)

3.2 Information You Provide (Account Holders)

When a parent or guardian creates an account, we collect:

• An email address (used for account management and communications), or an equivalent identifier if signing in with Apple or Google
• Your child's age range (to display age-appropriate content)
• A unique account identifier (User ID), generated automatically to link your account data and manage your subscription
• Purchase and subscription history, to provide and manage access to premium content

We do not collect your child's name, photo, or any other identifying personal details. We do not currently collect analytics or usage data (such as which articles are viewed or app session activity) from any user, with or without an account.

3.3 What We Do NOT Collect

We do not collect:

• Your child's full name or photo
• Location data
• Payment information (handled securely by the app store)
• Data from third-party social media accounts beyond basic sign-in identifiers, where you choose to sign in with Apple or Google

4. How We Use Your Information

We use the information we collect to:

• Create and manage your account
• Deliver age-appropriate news content to your child
• Send you important account notifications (e.g. policy updates, security alerts)
• Process and manage your subscription and purchase history
• Comply with our legal obligations under applicable privacy laws

We will not use your email address to send marketing communications without your explicit consent.

For free, no-account access, the only use of the locally-stored data described in Section 3.1 is to apply the daily free-article limit on your own device.

5. Legal Basis for Processing

5.1 UK & EU (UK GDPR / GDPR)

Free, no-account access does not involve any processing of personal data, so no legal basis is required for that activity.

For account holders, we process personal data under the following legal bases:

• Contractual necessity – to provide the service you have signed up for
• Legal obligation – to comply with applicable law

Where processing involves a child's data, we rely on parental consent obtained at the point of account creation.

5.2 United States (COPPA)

KuryoNews is directed at children under 13 and is subject to the Children's Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA). In accordance with COPPA:

• We require verifiable parental consent before collecting any personal information from or about a child under 13
• Parents may review, correct, or request deletion of their child's information at any time by contacting privacy@kuryoapp.com
• We do not condition a child's participation in free, no-account access on the disclosure of any personal information whatsoever
• We do not share children's personal information with third parties for advertising or marketing purposes

To provide verifiable parental consent, we use email confirmation at the point of account creation. If you believe we have collected information from a child under 13 without proper consent, please contact us immediately at privacy@kuryoapp.com and we will delete it promptly.

6. Children's Privacy

KuryoNews is designed with children's safety as our highest priority.

• Free access requires no personal information from anyone, including children
• Only parents or guardians may create accounts
• We do not display behavioural advertising to children
• We do not sell children's personal information
• We do not collect or share usage or analytics data
• We comply with the UK Children's Code (Age Appropriate Design Code)
• We comply with COPPA (US Children's Online Privacy Protection Act)

If we become aware that personal data has been collected from a child without verifiable parental consent, we will delete it promptly.

7. Sharing Your Information

We do not sell your personal data. For account holders, we may share data with trusted third-party service providers who help us operate the app, including:

• Firebase (Google) – database and app infrastructure
• RevenueCat – subscription and payment management

All third-party providers are contractually required to protect your data and may only process it for the purposes we specify. We do not share personal data with any third party for advertising, profiling, or marketing purposes. No third-party sharing occurs during free, no-account access, since no personal data is collected in that mode.

8. Data Retention

For account holders, we retain your account data for as long as you have an active account. If you delete your account, we will delete your email address and associated data within 30 days, except where we are required to retain it for legal compliance purposes.

For free, no-account access, locally-stored technical data (Section 3.1) is retained on-device only and is cleared automatically every 24 hours. It is also removed if the app is uninstalled.

Your account identifier (User ID) and purchase history are retained for as long as your account is active, and deleted along with your account in accordance with the timelines above.

9. Your Rights

9.1 UK & EU Users (UK GDPR / GDPR)

As a parent or guardian and account holder, you have the right to:

• Access – request a copy of the data we hold about you
• Rectification – correct inaccurate data
• Erasure – request deletion of your data ('right to be forgotten')
• Restriction – ask us to limit how we process your data
• Portability – receive your data in a portable format
• Object – object to processing based on legitimate interests

To exercise any of these rights, contact us at privacy@kuryoapp.com. We will respond within 30 days. You also have the right to lodge a complaint with the Information Commissioner's Office (ICO) at ico.org.uk.

These rights apply to account holders. Since free, no-account access involves no personal data, there is no data to access, correct, or delete in connection with that use of the app.

9.2 US Users – COPPA Parental Rights

As a parent or guardian, you have the right to:

• Review the personal information we have collected from or about your child
• Request correction or deletion of your child's personal information
• Refuse further collection or use of your child's information
• Withdraw consent at any time by deleting your account

9.3 California Users (CCPA / CPRA)

If you are a California resident, you have additional rights under the California Consumer Privacy Act (CCPA) and California Privacy Rights Act (CPRA):

• Right to know what personal information we collect, use, disclose, and sell
• Right to delete personal information we have collected from you
• Right to opt out of the sale or sharing of personal information – we do not sell or share personal information
• Right to non-discrimination for exercising your privacy rights

10. International Data Transfers

KuryoNews is operated from the United Kingdom. For account holders, if you are accessing the app from the UK or EU, your data may be transferred to and processed in the United States (via Firebase/Google infrastructure). Such transfers are made subject to appropriate safeguards, including Standard Contractual Clauses approved by the UK ICO and European Commission. No international data transfer occurs during free, no-account access, since no data leaves your device.

11. Security

We use industry-standard security measures to protect your data, including encrypted data transmission (HTTPS) and secure cloud infrastructure via Firebase. While no system is completely secure, we take reasonable steps to protect your information from unauthorised access or disclosure.

12. Changes to This Policy

We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. If we make material changes, we will notify you by email or via an in-app notice at least 30 days before the changes take effect. The 'Last updated' date at the top of this page will always reflect the most recent version.
